The Church - Santa Maria ai Monti
Madonna with Child with Sts Lawrence and Stephen, found in the ruins of a nearby convent of the Poor Clares, hangs over the high altar. The apse is decorated by Giacinto Gimignani and Cristoforo Casolani. The dome is very beautiful, especially if you happen to get just the right light. The frescoes of the four Evangelists were painted by Casolani. In the niches are the statues of the four major prophets of the Old Testament, made in 1599 by Giovanni Anguilla. In each of the eight sections there are depictions of scenes from the life of the Blessed Virgin, made by several artists. In the ceiling is another fresco by Casolani, depicting The Ascension, Angels and Doctors of the Church. In the vault and the arches of the chapels are stucco angels by Ambrogio Buonvicino. The first chapel on the right is a painting of The Madonna with Child and St Charles Borromeus, and scenes from the life of St Charles Borromeus, by Giovanni da San Giovanni. In the second chapel on the right are paintings of the Pietà and the Road to Calvary. In the left arm of the transept, beneath an altar, is the tomb and effigy of St Benedict Joseph Labre, who died here in 1783. The effigy was made by Achille Albacini in 1892. In the chapels on the left you can see Durante Alberti's Annunciation, Cesare Nebbia's Adoration of the Magi and The Dream of St Joseph and Girolamo Muziano's Nativity. On April 26th each year, a copy of the painting of the Blessed Virgin is carried in procession through the streets. The feast of St Benedict Joseph Labre is celebrated on 16 April.

If you are searching for a nice restaurant to taste the real Italian cuisine or if you feel delighted to have a drink in the most beautiful neighbourhood in Rome, please, check those places out:
- All bars in Madonna dei Monti’s square!
- Ai tre scalini at via Panisperna, corner via dei Serpenti;
- Grazie a Dio è venerdì and Al Tittarello at via degli Zingari;
- Al vino, al vino at via dei Serpenti.
How to reach the place
You will definitely arrive by plane so, for those of you who still have to come to visit us for the first time, just remember to take a cab from the airport (approximately € 40 to the Centre) or take the train from the train Terminal. The train is the Leonardo Express, it doesn’t make any stops and comes directly to the central railway Station Termini. It costs 14 € and the departures are every 30 minutes. Check the web site at www.trenitalia.com.
From Termini just take the subway Metro B direction Laurentina and get off at Cavour or walk via Cavour down from Termini to the corner with via dei Serpenti. It’ll take around 15 minutes. Of course check out where you’ll sleep as those directions are referred to the Church!
If you come by car, from the highway follow the directions for GRA (Grande Raccordo Anulare), take it (it’s a circular freeway that organizes traffic around the city) and follow for Centre or for Tangenziale Est. You’ll get to the railway Station Termini and from there to via Cavour.
You can park everywhere but check out for blue lines, it’s 1 € per hour. Palazzo Brancaccio has a private parking.
Subway is € 1 every ride. You can buy the tickets directly at the station or at any bar.
